The Alicante town of Villajoyosa tops the list for 2024 , with its colourful fishermen’s houses facing the Mediterranean coast. This small fishing village in eastern Spain has captivated European Best Destination , which recommends travelling to enjoy its good climate, its three kilometres of beaches and its architecture .

Less known than Villajoyosa, even to the Spanish themselves, is the town of Ares del Maestrat, with the ruins of its castle crowning the town from the top of a hill and magnificent views of the Maestrazgo landscape. The small town extends at the foot of the hill – it has less than 200 inhabitants – with the Plaza Mayor as its central axis. Nearby is the old market, a building that preserves the Gothic-Mudejar arches from the 14th century . On a visit you should not miss trying the olla, a delicious stew typical of the region.
