July 22, 2024

“My name is Pipper and I am a Parson Russell Terrier. I was born in May 2016 in Borda Txiki, at the foot of Mount Adarra, a stone’s throw from San Sebastián, and I live between La Bella Easo and Madrid. I love being with my sister Txiki and going into the mountains to follow a thousand and one trails, but what I like most is going on excursions with my human to discover new places to run and play ball.” This is how Pipper introduces himself on his blog (pipperontour.com), in fact this is how Pablo Muñoz Gabilondo, the owner of Pipper, the most travelled dog in Spain, introduces him, because few things make Pipper as happy as embarking on a new adventure with Pablo and his family. Since January 2023, Pipper, in addition to travelling, has been on TV (and he also likes this) with his weekly programme Pipper en Ruta , on La2 de TVE, with which he has travelled all over Spain and tells us about the places that are most ‘dog-friendly’.

To celebrate World Dog Day , we have spoken to Pablo Muñoz who gives us a lot of advice on how to travel with our pet . Many dog owners have thought about travelling with them at some point, and that’s when doubts arise. What are the best destinations? What should we take? What should we take into account when travelling by train, car, plane or boat? If you also have a dog and you are thinking of travelling with it, keep reading, because Pablo’s advice will help you resolve your doubts.

Is Spain a country well prepared for travelling with dogs?
Spain is improving , there are other countries in Europe that are further ahead, such as Italy, France or Switzerland, where it is absolutely normal to take a train with your dog and travel from one city to another, while in Spain Renfe is now doing a pilot test on some AVE trains. We are further behind and everything is going slowly, but something is moving and that is positive. Iryo has also started to admit dogs on all its trains this summer, but only during the summer. Let’s hope that it becomes established beyond a summer experience. Small movements that are important, although insufficient.
