The 10 most incredible beaches facing the Cantabrian Sea

July 22, 2024

If you’ve set your sights on northern Spain for the summer of 2024 , take note of these beaches, because we’ll tell you which beaches you have to visit to feel like you’re in paradise. From Galicia to the Basque Country , passing through Asturias and Cantabria , on every kilometre of this coastal strip you’ll find beautiful beaches and coves, but these are the best.

RODAS BEACH, CIES ISLANDS (PONTEVEDRA)
Facing the Vigo estuary, three islands make up the Cíes archipelago : San Martiño , which can only be accessed by private boat; and Faro and Monteagudo , joined by a spectacular stretch of sand that has sometimes been described as “the best beach in the world”. The kilometre of fine white sand on Rodas beach and its crystal-clear emerald-green waters make this beach known as the Galician Caribbean. To visit it, you have to take a boat from Vigo, Cangas or Baiona, which must be booked in advance, especially in high season, because daily visits are limited.

ITZURUN BEACH, ZUMAIA (GUIPÚZCOA)
To discover one of the most spectacular beaches on the Gipuzkoa coast, you have to go to Zumaia and take a dip in Itzurun, nestled between beautiful cliffs 150 metres high . It forms part of the so-called flysh route and its strong waves make it one of the most sought-after beaches for surfers. If you want to find the best panoramic view, go to the San Telmo hermitage, on the edge of one of the side cliffs, and then continue walking along the path in search of the best views.
